Het verhaal van Zeno begint zoals dat van vele Zwitserse horlogemerken. Het is het verhaal van een seizoensarbeider Jules Godat, die zich als er in de koude wintermaanden op het land niet veel te doen is, uitleent aan horlogebedrijven. In zijn boerderij in La Chaux-de-Fonds heeft hij een bescheiden atelier ingericht, Hier maakt hij uurwerken van losse onderdelen die de vele horlogefabrieken in de omgeving hem aanleveren.
